Getting Started
To help you get started planning your project, see guidance below with some key areas to consider and plan around.
Form Your Team
Think about the brief and your team. Do you have the right group in place to deliver on the brief? What skills does each person bring?
Assign Roles
Decide who will lead, how you'll communicate, and how you'll hold each other accountable.
Set Timelines
Remember, this project is extracurricular and designed to give you real-world experience. Set timelines, stick to them, and work as a team—it's a team sport!
Pro Tip
Great teams listen to each other, share ideas, and support everyone to do their best.
What Problem Are You Solving?
Identify Your Problem
Before you start, ask yourself: What problem does my product solve, and who is it for? Think about your audience: What do they need, and how will your product help them?
Choose Your Focus
Your idea can focus on anything—from creating social good (e.g., helping lonely older people find companions) to solving everyday challenges (e.g., finding dog walkers).
Pro Tip
Ask yourself: What is the product? Why is it important? Who is it for? Remember: The best ideas solve problems AND are easy to use.
Designing Your Product
1
Focus on User Experience
How will your product work? How will people use it? This is a crucial step! Focus on the user experience (UX): What's the first thing users will see? How will they navigate your product?
2
Create Prototypes
Create prototypes (like sketches or digital mockups) to show how your product will work, and share your ideas with your mentor to get feedback.
3
Test and Refine
Keep testing your design. Is it simple to use? Does it solve the problem you identified?
Bring Your Product to Life
Create Your Homepage
Start by creating your homepage, which should clearly show what your product is and why it's useful.
If you have coders in your group, you can create a homepage using HTML and CSS, or you can use no code / low code options like workdpress or Go Daddy to create a test site.
Design a Site Map
Then, design a site map—a blueprint of all the pages on your website and how they connect.
Use the Right Tools
Use tools like Figma, Google Slides, or even pen and paper to map out your ideas.
Pro Tip: Focus on simplicity. Your site doesn't need to be huge—it just needs to work well and be easy to navigate!
Promote Your Product
Create a Video
Create a 3-minute promotional video using tools like Canva or free editing apps. Use your phone for footage—it doesn't need to be a Hollywood production! Focus on clearly communicating your product's purpose and audience.
Design a Logo
Design a simple, eye-catching logo using tools available at school or free apps online.
Social Media
Create up to 3 social media posts (Instagram or Facebook format) designed to grab attention and promote your product.
Pro Tip
It's not about the production quality—it's about the creativity and communication of your ideas!
Pitch Your Product Like a Pro
1
Develop a Business Plan
Develop a simple business plan that answers key questions: Who is your product for? Why will people use it? How will it make money (or sustain itself)?
2
Prepare Your Pitch
Then, prepare to pitch your product at the final showcase event in June. Your pitch should be no more than 10 minutes and tell a story—what inspired your product, how it works, and why it will succeed.
3
Impress the Judges
Judges will be looking for creativity, teamwork, and how well you've thought through your idea!
Final Tips for Success
1
Stay Focused
Break the project into small steps and tackle them one by one.
2
Communicate
Keep talking to your team and mentor—they're there to help!
3
Be Bold
Don't be afraid to try new ideas and think outside the box.
